Prelude To A Game Store
The original concept for Gamers Sanctuary came to us about five or six years ago. Like anybody else we thought that the idea of owning our own game store would be cool. And we also thought that we could do a pretty good job of running it. Our main goal was to create a store where people could come in and freely play their game(s) of choice and be able to get just about anything they needed for that game right there at the store.
Back in the day the model of Gamers Sanctuary was to pretty much be just a card shop with maybe some Dungeons & Dragons thrown in there somewhere. Shortly after the initial idea came to us Dave and a friend of ours, named Jon, opened up the first Gamers Sanctuary on Main street in Durand Michigan. Shortly after opening they had a partnership offer that included the addition of a L.A.N. center and they said, "sure". Sadly, a few months into it there were some complications and the L.A.N. center pulled out. This put a dent into the store from which it would never recover. On top of running the store in Durand Dave and Jon also worked full time jobs and it was really started to take its toll. So after nine months they had to close the doors on the original Gamers Sanctuary.
As dark a times as these were there was no need to fear. The light of fun and games for all would soon shine through, becuase the best was yet to come.
About a year and a half ago we got the bug again and wanted to try and give Gamers Sanctuary another go. We really felt that, given the opportunity, the store could do well. Knowing some of the obsticles Dave and Jon ran into with the prototype we decided to do a lot more research. After several months of digging through various forums on the web we ran across a man named Lloyd Brown. Lloyd is the former owner of a gaming store in Jacksonville Florida called War Dogs. He'd since sold the store to pursue writing, and not just any kind of writing, he was writing a book about how to open a game store (what a stroke of luck). Now under the guidance of a veteran game store owner we were ready to start revising the Gamers Sanctuary store model. And, after seven months of planning and two months of construction, the "New & Improved" Gamers Sanctuary opened it's doors at 10am Saturday March 3rd 2007 and they rest, as you know, is HISTORY!
